Bleeding from the Rectum in Younger Individuals Associated to 8.5 Times Higher Risk of Bowel Cancer

  • Scientists say that rectal bleeding is a significant sign of young-onset colorectal cancer in adults below 50.
  • Specialists advise that individuals under 50 who experience this symptom should undergo a colonoscopy to screen for colorectal cancer.
  • Rates of young-onset colorectal cancer in young adults have been increasing for over a ten years.

Rectal bleeding is a telltale sign that individuals under 50 may have colorectal cancer, based on a new study.

Researchers found that rectal bleeding in younger adults increases the likelihood of a colorectal cancer identification by a factor of 8.5.

The researchers arrived at their findings after examining 443 patients under 50 who had a colonoscopy at a university health system between 2021 and 2023.

Of the participants, 195 were diagnosed with early-onset colorectal cancer while the remaining subjects had normal colonoscopy findings.

The researchers said that the vast majority of the young cancer patients had a colonoscopy because of signs, not because of routine screenings.

They further stated that a significant percentage of the cancer patients had no genetic background of the disease.

Furthermore, people who had used tobacco in the past were over two times as prone to develop young-onset colorectal cancer as people who were non-smokers.

The researchers’ study was presented this week at a professional gathering. The results have not been published in a scientific publication.

Bleeding from the Rectum May Indicate Colorectal Cancer

The researchers said that their research shows that individuals under 50 as well as healthcare providers should consider rectal bleeding as a important indicator of colorectal cancer.

“A large number of the young-onset colorectal cancers that I see have no genetic predisposition,” commented a colorectal surgeon and lead researcher of the research. “This study adds weight to the issue of who should or shouldn’t require a colonoscopy: if you have a person under the screening age with rectal bleeding, you should seriously consider a colonoscopy.”

Specialists interviewed who were independent in the study agreed with this assessment.

“Younger individuals with rectal bleeding should undergo a colonoscopy,” said a professor of medical oncology. “The hardest message to get across is that colorectal cancer is a condition of younger individuals.”

Another surgical oncologist stated that medical professionals should no longer presume that rectal bleeding in individuals under 50 is caused by hemorrhoids.

“Colorectal cancer is a young person’s condition,” he commented. “We can not dismiss signs such as rectal bleeding in younger individuals.”

A leading expert of cancer screening science at a major cancer organization agrees.

“Physicians often downplay signs of colorectal cancer in individuals under 50, believing that the probability of the signs being caused by colorectal cancer are unlikely because the patient is too young,” the expert noted. “The study results are expected. Ongoing rectal bleeding is not normal and the cause should be immediately investigated.”

A cancer specialist commented that the study is an important reminder to people under the age of 50.

“Don’t ignore any signs,” he said. “This study delivers this message a little louder.”

Colorectal Cancer Cases Increasing in Younger Individuals

A national cancer institute estimates there will be over 150,000 diagnoses of colorectal cancer identified in the United States this year.

More than 100,000 of those instances will be large intestine cancer, while just under 50,000 will be rectum cancer.

The diagnoses are split roughly equally between males and females.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer deaths in men and the fourth most common leading cause in females in the United States. It’s the second most frequent most common cause of cancer fatalities in total. Colorectal cancer is projected to cause approximately 53,000 deaths this year.

The institute reports that the rate of people being found with colorectal cancer in the United States has been declining approximately 1% per year since the mid-1980s. They attribute timely testing and improvements in lifestyle habits.

However, they point out that the decrease is primarily occurring in individuals over 50. In people below 50, the rate of colorectal cancer detection rose over 2% per year between 2012 and 2021.

The death rate from colorectal cancer has also been declining slightly in the overall population, but it has been rising slightly in younger adults.

In fact, colon cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in adults between 20 to 49 in the United States.

An specialist noted that people born approximately 1990 have twice the risk of colorectal cancer relative to people born approximately 1950.

“These dangers are increasing and are carried forward as people get older, meaning we see more diagnoses of colorectal cancer before and after age 45,” he said.

Medical professionals are unsure what is driving the rise in young-onset colorectal cancer, but nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, and excess weight are among the suspected factors.

Another expert mentioned there are also some theories that the overuse of medications as well as inflammation in the body may be contributing to increase colorectal cancer incidence.

In addition, there has additionally been some study suggesting that intestinal bacteria may additionally play a role.

One specialist suggested that contact to this type of bacteria as a child may cause colorectal cancer to appear 20 to 30 years down the road.

“We’re still trying to figure everything out,” he commented.

Why Bowel Cancer Tests Are Important

Medical experts say that colorectal cancer is treatable if detected in its initial phases. In advanced phases, it can be deadly.

They say that’s why examinations are vital.

Present guidelines call for males and females to begin being screened for colorectal cancer at age forty-five.

In addition, tests may be required before age 45 if a person has a genetic background of colorectal cancer or has specific health issues such as bowel inflammation.

It’s recommended that colonoscopy screenings be done once a decade for people with no family history of the disease and no polyps discovered during the procedure. The time between tests can be shorter for other patients.

Colon examinations are typically considered the best test for colorectal cancer, but alternative methods, such as home test kits, can also be used.

Besides rectal bleeding, additional signs of colorectal cancer include:

  • alteration of bowel habits
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • pain or stomach pain
  • unexpected weight loss

An specialist notes that family history should never be overlooked.

“Individuals should know their genetic background of cancer and any diagnosis of colorectal cancer among family members should be talked about with their physician, especially if family members were diagnosed at a early age,” he said.

Ways to Reduce Your Chances of Colorectal Cancer

There are a number of ways a individual can lower their risk of colorectal cancer. Among them:

  • Healthy diet: Eating patterns high in fat and deficient in fiber are linked with an increased chance of colorectal cancer. Red and processed meats have been demonstrated to raise the danger. Protein from poultry, fish, and legumes is regarded as a better choice. High-fiber foods, such as produce, vegetables, and grains, may decrease the risk of colorectal cancer.
  • Regular exercise: A leading health institute suggests two and a half hours of moderate exercise a week. {Regular|Consistent
