Bluefin Tuna Fetches Record Price of $3.2 million at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A bulky Pacific bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.
The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish came from the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which manages locations across the country and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna heralds good luck," stated the business owner, a regular participant at the annual January sale.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for submitting record bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious new year auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Past
After the auction, the winner told reporters that he was "astonished at the amount," noting, "I had thought we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price escalated in no time."
This most recent purchase surpasses his previous notable purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously saying that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to break his personal record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is notoriously characterized by sky-high prices. The previous year, the first tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a different food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations across Japan.
The frenetic atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The record-priced tuna was promptly sliced up for patrons at the winner's sushi establishments shortly after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a good way after tasting something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one happy patron.
