Chelsea's Manager Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' at the Club
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca remarked that the build-up to the weekend's triumph against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" since his arrival with the London club.
The Italian delivered a puzzling statement in his after-game interview even after earning a 2-0 win at home courtesy of goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those three precious points sent Chelsea once again into the English top flight's top four, potentially improving the mood after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the side's drought without a win to four fixtures.
Yet, when asked about Gusto's contribution and general performance, Maresca surprisingly divulged his displeasure over the preceding 48-hour period within the club.
"How the squad are eager to learn has been superb and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with a host of issues, they are excelling after a tricky week," he said.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because a lot of people failed to back us."
Pressed on the specifics, the former Leicester City boss continued: "Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "Broadly speaking. Overall," before specifying when queried if it was directed towards fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are very content with the fans."
Injury & Suspension Woes
Maresca also pointed to Chelsea's ongoing fitness and suspension issues, remarking they had been without key forward Cole Palmer for a large portion of the season, in addition to losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I really applaud the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, 5 of them without Moises Caicedo, eleven of them minus Cole Palmer, almost all of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are performing fantastic. Today was five games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play almost all season without our top player.
"We play five games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to recognize because the work from the players is outstanding."
Chelsea's win over Everton cemented their standing in 4th place in the Premier League standings, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Speculation Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was not immediately clear who or what caused Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the worst of his spell as Chelsea manager.
In that period, the coach had returned with his staff and players from Bergamo, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-game news conference where he seemed at ease, and engineered a win over an high-flying Everton team.
It was unclear whether any particular press stories had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from within the club at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue related to the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
