Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have contributed, optimistic about the prospects of the organization, and anticipate tracking their development".
Summers, who once headed Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails showed that Summers corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted the economist's choice to resign.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company stated.
Political Context
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress agreed on recently to approve a measure that would require the federal prosecutors to release its files on Epstein.
The legislation will then head to the desk of the White House for approval. He has stated he plans to sign the measure, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Email Contents
A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago included numerous prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications revealed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often trying to connect the academic to influential global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were made available with the wider community, he stated he assumed "complete accountability for my poor judgment to persist in interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild trust and mend relationships with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
Summers occupied high-level positions under two Democratic presidents; serving as economic leader under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He led the university from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public roles previously on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, announced that Summers was ceased to be affiliated with the group.
He entered the leadership of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
